My First Bible Verse

Read John 3:16-20

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life (v.16)”

I love John 3:16 because that is the first Bible verse I learned. Last year, I attended the Good News Club. Every Monday after school, many of my friends at Occohannock Elementary School and I went to our church. Epworth United Methodist Church. There, Ms. Ginna, Mr. Mark, and other teachers taught us many Bible stories and verses. We had many fun activities based on the story we read in the Bible. That was the Good News Club.

John 3:16 was the first Bible verse we learned and memorized. Ms. Ginna taught us the song, the sign, and helped us remember them. I got a necklace reward when I memorized it. I liked it. I was also happy to memorize John 3:16 because it was a good verse. It says that God gave His only son to us because He loves us, and we will not suffer but have forever life with Jesus! Whenever I memorize it, I feel my heart get warmer and know that Jesus Loves me. This summer, my tummy was so sick it was the first time that I felt like I was going to die. At that time, in my mind, I sang the John 3:16 song that I learned from the Good News Club, and I knew that Jesus was with me and I had a forever life with Jesus.

As Christmas comes, I hope people remember John 3:16 and know Jesus loves them. Especially for those who are sick like me or more than me, I pray that Jesus’ love heals their pain and suffering.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, we pray that you will keep us safe, and we will never, ever perish, but we will have eternal life. We thank you for coming to us and loving us. Amen.

Spoken by Grace Oh, typed by her parents.

Epworth United Methodist Church holds a Good News Club at the church for students of Occohannock Elementary each Monday on the Eastern shore of Maryland. For advent season this year, the pastor put together a devotional for the month of December.

I hope you are as moved as I was when I read this account in Grace Oh’s words, captured by her parents. The Ohs have given us permission to share this in its entirety, including Grace’s name.

God’s love is powerful and His promises are true. Thank you, Grace, for reminding us!
