Children Make Us Smile
Volunteering in a Good News Club is a joy, and sometimes a surprise! Children haven’t learned to shade the truth, so you never know what a child will say. Here is a peek into what can happen at GNC.
While introducing the Missions Story at Good News Club, the teacher asked, “What is a missionary?” A little girl raised her hand and suggested, “Is it someone who lives in Michigan?”
Mandy* raised her hand during the invitation time to show she wanted to talk more about what it means to trust Jesus. A counselor began asking questions to check her understanding of the Gospel message – specifically why a person needs Jesus – and asked, “Are you a sinner?” “No, I’m not a sinner!” Mandy replied. The counselor encouraged her to keep on listening in club and sent her back to the group activity, recognizing she wasn’t ready to trust Jesus as Savior.
The next week Mandy raised her hand again and met with the counselor.
She said, “My mother says I am a sinner.”
Some children have a God-given talent for leadership that can be used for good… or not. A GNC leader, speaking of one such boy in her club, “I always say that Jared* will either be a preacher or a con artist.”
Thankfully, Good News Club has had an influence on Jared’s life as evidenced below.
One spring day at the beginning of a Good News Club (GNC) meeting, a teacher pulled the leader aside and asked to speak with her. The teacher said, “I want all of you to know that you are having an impact on the students at our school. You are making a difference.
I have to tell you what happened in my class today. A girl came in from recess crying. Jared, who has been in GNC, asked her why she was crying. The girl replied that she was worried that her grandmother was going to die. The boy faced her and put his hands on her shoulders.
He said to her, ‘It will be okay. God – Loves – You! God loves you! He will take care of your grandmother and even if she dies, she will be in a good place with God and his angels. God loves you!’ The girl stopped crying and they hugged.”
The teacher continued, “I just had to share this with you because God is changing lives. I am thankful the Good News Club meets in our school. You volunteers need to know the impact you are making.”
