Child Evangelism Fellowship’s goal is to reach every child with the life-transforming message of the Gospel. The message can be understood by children IF we clearly and simply give the scripture teaching essential for salvation.
One of the tools that works so well is the Wordless Book – a book that tells the gospel in colors. This is the history of that little book:
How did this “wordless” book first come into existence over a hundred years ago?
Charles Spurgeon preached a sermon entitled “The Wordless Book” in 1866 at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. He told the story of a minister who had put three pages together:
Black to remind him of his sinfulness
Red for Christ’s blood poured out for him, and
White for the cleansing provided on the cross.
By 1875, the Gold page depicting the glory of heaven had been added. D.L. Moody addressed a children’s service based on a book with these four pages. “Responses were very promptly given,” wrote Moody’s son in a biography.
Fanny Crosby, blind author of beloved hymns, when asked by children, “Tell us a story, Fanny,” would take a Wordless Book from her purse and tell them the story that never grows old.
Today this little book is still being used to effectively share the gospel with children (and adults!) in over 200 countries around the world.
